A 71-year-old grandmother has become a local celebrity in China for her valiant efforts to control traffic at a busy pedestrian crossing.

Passers-by say Granny Cai looks like a dancer as she jumps between lanes of traffic on the hectic road in Fuzhou, Fujian province. She says she is prepared to risk her own safety to stop both motorists and pedestrians from breaking the rules of the road.

Cai grabs hold of pedestrians who try to cross when the lights are at red, and jumps in front of vehicles who try to cross at the wrong time. "I am nearing the end of my life and I wanted to do something useful for other people before I go," she told the China News Network.

"Some people shout at me or ignore my instructions and some even throw nasty words at me, but I just tell them peacefully that it's for their own safety." Cai says she will continue her work as a volunteer traffic controller for as long as she can to try to reduce the number of accidents in the city.

I wonder if she ever gets in the middle of the road and can't remember what she came out for...
