How Man Ahm Sweating Leik A Pig

Scientists are hoping to finally crack one of the great unsolved mysteries - how Geordies can go out in winter without a coat.

Researchers from Newcastle's Centre for Life want to find out if the locals famed hardiness is anything more than a myth. One theory being explored is that Geordies have thicker skins than people in other parts of the country. Scientists are calling on Newcastle's inhabitants to take part in a survey for the city's 10 day ScienceFest festival.

Linda Conlon, chief executive of the Centre for Life said: "We decided to investigate the reputation Geordies have for not wearing a coat in even the worst weather. Is there a possible genetic reason for our bravery or is it simply because we like to show off our finery on a night out?"

An online questionnaire will ask Geordies about their coat wearing behaviour to find out whether they are naturally warmer than their Southern counterparts, or if having no need for a coat is part of Newcastle's cultural heritage. In addition to the survey, scientists will take to the city's night spots to carry out fieldwork and interview revellers. It is the first time the myth has been explored and the results will be announced during the ScienceFest which will run between March 6 and 15.

Put it in your diaries people!
