A US woman fell off a cliff after her boyfriend proposed to her during a hiking trip.

Rescue officials say she slipped and fell about 10ft down a rock face shortly after accepting the proposal. The woman, whose name has not been released, had to be rescued by helicopter. The couple had been hiking along the rugged Billy Goat Trail in Maryland.

Assistant Chief Scott Graham of the Montgomery County fire department joked to The Washington Post that it must have been "a heck of a proposal". The woman briefly lost consciousness, but her injuries weren't life-threatening.

The spectacular Great Falls of the Potomac River are a popular destination for hikers in the suburbs of Washington.
